A Brief History On Ideals Derry Daring Toy Line...
1975-76 POP TOP CAMPER
The Pop Top Camper was released in 1975. It was based on the Canyon Rig from Ideals Evel Knievel line. It was originally conceived as the "Baja Camper". It featured a removable roof, opening tailgate and camper pod! The bed also had a motorcycle holder for transporting the Trick Cycle. The Pop-Top Camper ended production in 1976 along with the rest of the Derry Daring line. There are no foreign versions of the Pop Top Camper known to exist.
CAMPER POD
The camper pod was made entirely of plastic, with vinyl being used as the roof material. The camper pod actually consisted of 10 pieces(base, door, 2 foldout sides, 2 inner supports, canopy door support, 2 canopy hold down pieces & the canopy). The Pop Top Camper did not share any of the accessories from the Canyon Rig . One very unique accessory was the folding table that actually had folding legs!

There is also a blackwall tire version. The earlier sets featured a brown table, chair, and first aid kit with the rest of the accessories being yellow. In some of the later sets, the colors are reversed. Some sets also had a white camper door.

EARLY 1975 TRICK CYCLE
The Trick Cycle was released in 1975. It was basically a rebranded Evel Knievel Stunt Cycle. The heart of the Trick Cycle was its gyroscopic motor which was housed inside of a metal frame. The body was made of two plastic pieces that were rivet together. The metal frame was fitted inside the body and a plastic fork was rivet to the front. A chromed plastic engine/exhaust piece was rivet to each side. A hollow, black, rubber tip was glued on to the rear of the Trick Cycle on each side as well. The rims where made of clear plastic and the tires of rubber. Inside the front of the Trick Cycle body was a spring. One end attached to the metal frame inside and the other end to the front fork. This is what gave the Trick Cycle its famous spring front end. Many of the early Trick Cycles had defective spring mounts causing the spring action to not work properly. This version was the last of the old style Stunt Cycles/boxes from 1974. Once the supply of Trick Cycles were used up, the newer versions were placed in the older style boxes. Once the boxes were used up, the newer full color box was introduced. Typically Trick Cycle seats were blue and Stunt Cycle seats were black. However, Its not uncommon to see the reverse. If Ideal needed more Trick/Stunt Cycles they just grabbed from whatever line had extras. One other thing to note is the Derry figure. The very first version of the figure had a pink jump suit with a shiny chrome like front and pink cape. Soon after its release the cape disappeared. No foreign versions of the Trick Cycle are known to exist .
LATE 1975-76 TRICK CYCLE
In late 1975 Ideal did a huge upgrade to the Trick/Stunt Cycle. The engine, exhaust and tailpipes were now one black piece of plastic. This stronger construction held up better and was more forgiving to scraps than the chrome. The front fork featured new handle bars with no center piece and a more rugged suspension. The seat color was changed to orange, then later black. The front of Derry's jumpsuit was later changed to white material with chrome flecks sewn in. For a brief period of time Ideal used white plastic on the wheels and trick bars of the Trick/Stunt Cycle(also wheels on Stunt & Crash Car). These can be found, but are fairly rare. Production of the Trick Cycle ended in 1976 along with the rest of the Derry Daring line.

The gyro motor(perfectly balance metal wheel with plastic gears attached) locked in to a notch in the rear of the base. The top/ main body was made of plastic and attached to the base using screws. On the back of the gyro motor case were two rubber exhaust tips attached to springs. It originally had white body with blue interior. In the latter part of production the colors were reversed. The Wheelie Car was discontinued in 1976 with the rest of the Derry Daring line. No foreign version are know to exist.

One last thing to note is the Derry figure itself. It originally came with a pink jumpsuit that featured a cape & shiny chrome like front(see 1975 Trick Cycle Exhibit).
